READ FAST, FANGIRL, REPEAT
Es ist Zeit mich selbst zu therapieren und über Bücher zu schreiben. Weil ich meinen Neujahrsvorsatz bereue, keine neuen Bücher zu kaufen sondern nur die zu lesen, die ich bereits besitze oder leihen kann; aber auch, weil ich schon seit längerem mal über meine liebsten Schwarzen Autor*innen sprechen wollte. Da hab ich mir gedacht: warum nutze ich nicht den Britischen Black History Month um genau das zu tun. Hier also meine Lobeshymne/Liebeserklärung an einige Schwarze Autor*innen, die nicht nur dann gelesen werden sollten wenn Black History Month ist, oder BLM Proteste in den Nachrichten sind, sondern immer. Ich kann das neue Jahr kaum erwarten, wenn ich endlich wieder in den Buchladen gehen kann und ALLE BÜCHER kaufe. Aber bis dahin muss es reichen, hier ein wenig zu schwärmen und Dir hoffentlich ein paar Bücher zu empfehlen.
I guess it is time to therapise myself and talk about books. Because I have been regretting one of my new years resolutions, which was not to buy any new books and instead read those I already own or can borrow from people. But I also had the idea to write about my favourite Black authors and thought: why not do so during the UK’s Black History Month. So here is to Black writers and their excellent work that deserves to be read not just during Black History Month or when BML protests are all over the news, but all year round! And I can’t wait for 2022 when I’ll run to the book store and buy ALL THE BOOKS. But for now I will just gush about them and hope that you find some stuff to read.
I. AKWAEKE EMEZI
Jaja, ich weiß, ich hab schon öfter über Akwaeke Emezi’s Bücher gesprochen, aber ich muss es einfach immer wieder tun. In den letzten vier Jahren sind vier Bücher von Emezi erschienen (Süßwasser, PET, The Death Of Vivek Oji, Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir), von denen ich bisher nur zwei lesen konnte. Außerdem kommen drei weitere Bücher nächstes Jahr heraus (Bitter, Content Warning: Everything, You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty), die ich auf jeden Fall alle auch haben will. Ich freue mich besonders auf Bitter, weil es die Vorgeschichte zu PET ist, was Emezi’s erster Jugendroman ist. Ich bin auch gespannt auf den ersten Gedichtband Content Warning: Everything, weil ich rausfinden möchte, wie Emezi’s Schreibstil sich in Gedichtform von der Prosa unterscheidet. Ich habe außerdem gelesen dass You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty schon als Film/Serie adaptiert werden soll. Falls Du es also noch nicht getan hast – lies mal was von Akwaeke Emezi!
Yes, yes, I know I keep writing about Akwaeke Emezi and their books, but they are simply one of my favourite authors and I can’t NOT mention them. In the last four years they have published four books (Freshwater, PET, The Death Of Vivek Oji, Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir), two of which I have yet to read. They also have three books forthcoming in 2022 (Bitter, Content Warning: Everything, You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty) that I will definitely buy as soon as possible. I’m especially looking forward to Bitter, which is a prequel to Emezi’s first young adult book PET, and their first poetry collection Content Warning: Everything, because I am intrigued to see what their writing style will differ from their prose. I also read that You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty will be adapted into a movie or series. So if you haven’t done so already – go read some Akwaeke Emezi!
II. BRIT BENNETT
Das letzte Buch was ich gelesen habe war Die Verschwindende Hälfte von Brit Bennett und ich war hellauf begeistert. Ich bin auf das Buch gekommen, weil es auf einigen dieser „Bücher von Schwarzen Autor*innen die 2020 erscheinen“-Listen stand, die während des Black-Lives-Matter-Sommer den Umlauf gemacht haben. Seitdem wollte ich es unbedingt haben und hatte Glück, dass mein Mitbewohni ein Exemplar zu Weihnachten bekommen hat. Die Verschwindende Hälfte endlich zu lesen war super und das Buch ist und bleibt SO GROßARTIG, ich will auf jeden Fall auch mal Bennetts Debütroman Die Mütter lesen, was auch mega gut klingt und anscheinend wurden auch für dieses Buch schon Filmrechte von Warner Bros gekauft!
The last book I read was The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, which I absolutely adored. I came across it last year on one of those lists of “books by Black authors coming out in 2020“, during the Black Lives Matter summer. Ever since then I wanted to get my hands on it and was lucky enough that my flatmate saw my Amazon Wishlist and then got a copy of The Vanishing Half for Christmas. Finally reading it now was great and the book was simply SO GOOD, I am definitely going to get my hands on a copy of Bennett’s first book The Mothers, which also sounds amazing and apparently Warner Bros have bought the rights to the book for a movie adaptation as well!
III. ANGIE THOMAS
Du denkst jetzt vielleicht: Kaja, wir wissen längst dass du Angie Thomas magst, du empfiehlst ihre Bücher immer wieder in denen Faves & Discoveries… Es stimmt. Aber ich werde es jetzt wieder tun!
Ich kann gar nicht in Worte fassen, wie traurig ich bin, dass ich Concrete Rose, das Prequel zu Angie Thomas’ Debütroman The Hate U Give, noch nicht lesen konnte. Ich habe auch immer noch nicht den The Hate U Give Film gesehen habe, aber das werde ich ändern, sobald ich ihn bei der Bibliothek bei der ich arbeite ausleihen kann!
Ihr zweiter Roman On The Come Up war auch super gut geschrieben und, wie alle von Angie Thomas geschriebenen Storys hat es mich total gefesselt. Die Dreharbeiten für die Filmadaption haben vor ein paar Tagen begonnen und auf Twitter postet die Autorin nebst süßen Hundefotos auch Hinweise auf ihr neues Buch, das voller Black Girl Magic sein soll – wir können uns also auf ihren ersten Fantasy-Roman einstellen? Ich bin auf jeden Fall Feuer und Flamme!

I cannot stress enough how sad I am that I haven’t yet read Concrete Rose, the prequel to Angie Thomas’s first novel The Hate U Give. I also still haven’t seen the The Hate U Give movie but I will take it out of the library that I currently work at as soon as it’s available!
The second novel On The Come Up was also amazingly written and, as all of Thomas’s stories, completely captivated me. Filming for a movie adaptation started just a few days ago, and on Twitter the author doesn’t just post cute pictures of her dog, but also hints at her new project, something to do with Black girl magic – so we can probably expect some fantasy? I’m definitely excited!

IV. YAA GYASI
Von Yaa Gyasi habe ich bisher auch erst ein Buch gelesen, aber Heimkehren war das erste Buch das ich dieses Jahr gelesen habe und ich denke immer noch ständig daran. Es war so fesselnd, brutal, lehrreich, wunderbar… ich kann es Dir nur sehr empfehlen. Ich bin so froh, dass ich es durch ein Youtubevideo entdeckt habe und dann in meinem Lieblingsbuchladen gefunden und gekauft habe. Ich will auf jeden Fall Gyasis zweiten Roman Ein Erhabenes Königreich lesen, deswegen ist es jetzt auf meiner Bücherliste, die ich mir nächstes Jahr anschaffen will. Ich hoffe, Du tust es mir nach und unterstützt diese großartige Autorin!
Yaa Gyasi is another author I have only read one book of so far, but Homegoing was the first book I read this year and I still think about it now. It was so captivating, brutal, educational, and beautiful, I simply cannot recommend it enough. I’m so glad that I came across it in a Youtube video and then found it on the shelves of my favourite book shop. I absolutely want to read Gyasi’s second book Transcendent Kingdom as well, so I’m putting it on my list of books I’m buying next year and hope that you will also support this amazing author’s work!
V. ELIZABETH ACEVEDO
Clap When You Land war schon Teil meiner Faves & Discoveries 2020, aber ich muss Elizabeth Acevedo auch bei dieser Gelegenheit erwähnen. Denn dieser atemberaubende Versroman ist einzigartig und ich freu mich so sehr darauf, andere Bücher von Acevedo von meiner Anschaffungsliste zu streichen. Jemensch hat mir Poet X empfohlen und ich will auf jeden Fall auch Soul Food lesen, weil ich Elizabeth Acevedos Schreibstil ganz großartig finde und wieviel Emotionen darin stecken. Ich brauche einfach mehr davon!!!
Clap When You Land also made it on my Faves & Discoveries list of 2020, but I do have to mention it and Elizabeth Acevedo here too. This breathtaking novel written in verse is one of a kind and I am looking forward to finally crossing other books by Acevedo off my “books to buy“-list. Someone recommended The Poet X to me, which is also written in verse and a New York Times Bestseller. I also want to read With The Fire On High, because I simply love Acevedo’s style and how many feelings are triggered by her stories. I need more!!!
VI. BERNARDINE EVARISTO
Ich habe Mädchen, Frau etc. 2020 gelesen und dieses Jahr dann The Emperor’s Babe. In beide Bücher bin ich erstmal nur schwer reingekommen, aber manchmal ist es es mehr als wert durchzuhalten. Denn ich bewundere Bernardine Evaristo für ihr Talent, schwer zu verarbeitende Geschichte in einer Weise zu erzählen, dass mensch trotzdem nicht aufhören kann. Mädchen, Frau etc. ist ein Prosaroman, aber The Emperor’s Babe ist ein weiterer Versroman, und Evaristo scheint immer wieder zwischen diesen Formen hin und her zu wechseln. Wenn ich mir ihre anderen Bücher anschaue, dann interessieren mich ihr semi-autobiografischer Versroman Lara und ihr Roman Blonde Roots wohl am meisten. Sie ist inzwischen ein großer Name in Literatur- und Akademiker*innen-Kreisen und hat viele Auszeichnungen erhalten, was nur einmal mehr bestätigt, dass es sich lohnt Bernardine Evaristos Werke zu lesen.
I read Girl, Woman, Other in 2020 and The Emperor’s Babe earlier this year. Both books took me some getting used to, but sometimes hard work pays off. Because I am in awe of Bernardine Evaristo and her talent of telling hard-to-swallow-stories that you still can’t put down. Girl, Woman, Other is written in prose, but The Emperor’s Babe is another novel written in verse, and Evaristo seems to switch between these forms of writing. When looking at other books she has written, I definitely want to check out Lara which is semi-autobiographical and also written in verse, and her book Blonde Roots. She’s a big name in the literary and academic field and has been nominated and awarded many prizes, so I’m sure it’s worth reading her other novels and plays, too.
Ich könnte wahrscheinlich ewig mit dieser Liste weitermachen, aber ich unterbreche mein Fangirling mal hier. Ich hoffe, dass Du ein paar neue Bücher entdecken konntest, die Du in Zukunft lesen möchtest. Falls Du ein paar Empfehlungen für mich hast, dann immer gerne her damit!
